| The world needs education to defeat terrorism - Khattab |
The African Union candidate vying for the position of UNESCO Director-General has stressed the need for the world to invest more in educating the young minds to defeat terrorism.
“You cannot deal with terrorism only with arms and security forces. You have to deal with it by immunizing the minds against indoctrination and radicalization,” Egypt’s Moushira Khattab told journalist in Abuja. She said her focus was to transform the organization and redirect it to its original mandate.
The mandate, she said, was to guarantee education for all, especially those in developing countries. “The major difference between developed and developing countries is education and if that gap must be reduced, developing countries must get more of education,” she said.
Education is an “inalienable right” of citizens and is crucial not only in empowering them but also in bringing development to the societies, she added. According to Khattab, Africa could only realise her agenda 2063 through quality education of the grassroots population.
She, however, promised to work with African leaders to ensure that education is given priority in their budget.
