Low blood pressure or hypotension is a condition whereby blood pressure drops below the average range - the opposite of hypertension. If left untreated and proper steps are not taken, it can eventually weaken the heart and lead to symptoms such as fatigue and fainting as the heart lacks adequate blood flow.
Dr. Amadi Ikechukwu, a specialist and consultant with Federal Medical Center, Abuja with experience of up to 17 years, spoke about women most exposed to low blood pressure. “Women who are inactive in their first trimester of pregnancy and also, slim young ladies are the most prone to low blood pressure.” He also said that hormones play a big role in the decrease of blood pressure a lot.
It is important to know how to grasp control over the condition and with simply making the listed measures a habit, you will notice great difference and suffer less:
Make sure you eat a balanced diet: Ensure you incorporate a lot of lean protein, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables to stay healthy and aid digestion and absorption too.
Drink a lot of water: Drinking a lot of fluids is essential. Apart from water include herbal teas for the electrolytes to prevent dehydration.
Avoid exposure to intense heat: Try to stay out of the sun or places with high temperatures. The heat will ultimately lead to dehydration and even cause you to faint.
Get plenty of rest: It is important to take everything slow when you feel tired. Or even better, get some rest. People with hypotension have less blood flow to the muscles and organs.
Take a lot of sodium: It is recommended that people with low blood pressure take more salt than average people although it shouldn’t go above 10 grams per day. Try sprinkling some salt into your drinking water or if you have trouble doing this, take sodium supplements.
Exercise regularly: To encourage blood flow, doing easy exercises like yoga can help loosen your limbs to avoid blocking blood flow. But whatever exercise you prefer doing, just make sure you have enough water with you to stay properly hydrated.
