| Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga |
Ghana’s Parliament is awaiting report of its Special Committee that investigated alleged bribery of members of the Appointment Committee after the conclusion of sittings.
A Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga had alleged that members of the Appointment Committee were paid GHC3, 000 each to influence the confirmation of the Energy Minister.
He said he had taken the money, but after realising it came from the Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, he and other National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs returned their share.
The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Ocquaye then constituted a five man committee headed by former Attorney General and MP, Joe Ghartey to investigate allegation of bribery, following a petition jointly written by three minority MPs, Mahama Ayariga, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Alhassan Suhuyini.
The committee was given four-week duration which elapsed at the weekend. Before then all principal characters in the alleged bribery saga had testified before the committee.
Lawmakers from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and leading opposition, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) putting aside their partisanship have jointly expressed desire to know the outcome of the investigation.
