| President Nana Akufo- Addo of Ghana |
He took over from President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who lost to the opposition, New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7, 2016 presidential election.
Akufo-Addo’s emergence to power puts an end to the ‘John oligarchy’ in the country. Since returning to constitutional rule in 1992, all Ghanaian presidents’ first names had been John; beginning from Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor and the late Evans John Atta-Mills to John Dramani Mahama.
In a colourful event held at the Black Stars Square in Accra, Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia were sworn-in President and Vice-President respectively. The occasion was witnessed by 15 heads of states, delegations of governments, ex-presidents and eminent personalities from Africa and beyond.
